Are YOU up for the CHALLENGE?

Beginning April 1, 2013, we will begin a year long journey of home sewing!  We're committing to not purchasing clothing for one year.  Instead, we will build our wardrobe by making it ourselves....
Challenging? YES
Impossible? NO!!

Join us.... Leave a comment and your email if you're interested.  We'll even invite you to author posts, share techniques, review sewing books, and display your efforts along the way.

Look for challenges in the coming weeks to help you get ready to take your sewing skills to the next level.  More later....

  1. This will be a real challenge since I need new bras and activewear. Hmm... Maybe I'll buy that stuff before the challenge starts! I'm in...for now...

    2. You could use a strophium instead of a bra. It's a long strip of fabric. You wrap it around. The end.

From what I can tell, they seem to have been in constant use from the Romans up to the 1920s. People usually think they disappeared in the Middle Ages (seems to be no dispute about their use in 12th century, but people are resistant about the Renaissance), but look at the silhouettes on Raphael's portraits. That's a strophium silhouette. And women in Victorian times who rejected the corset used strophiums. I really doubt they disappeared for 300 years and were rediscovered by anti-corset Victorians.

Alternatively, 2 lines of 1/16" hemp cord sewn into 1/4" channels makes a fantastic pair of bodies / stays / corset that lets you bend while giving plenty of support.

    3. Thank you for the advice Mackenzie. I think it would be more of a challenge to make a bra. Also, for me and many other full figured women, a stophium would not grant a lot of much needed support. Not speaking for the other ladies but I like what I have to sit high. Lol.

  2. Count me in, please! I'd love to give it a try..

I am planning to do a buying fast - not just RTW clothes..even fabrics and books etc and non sewing related stuff as well..with a few exceptions..for 2013, so I can focus more on making rather than accumulating stuff.. While the fast is good in stopping stuff coming in, I have no way of making sure I make use of my decent stash. So, I hope this sewalong will give me the push to use up my stash and make some nice clothes for myself.

I'm still a beginner and have just learnt to make a pair of pants and a top that's on its way to become a TNT pattern.. So, I might be a slow sewer!

  5. Hi Nanna,

You may sew whatever you like at whatever pace you prefer. We may occasionally put up specific challenges. Our real goal is to increase our sewing skills and focus on making our own clothes. I, personally, love making suits and slacks. However, I want to focus more on dresses and blouses during the year. My achilles heel is "knits." So, I want to challenge myself in that area as well. Let us know what you decide.... Blessings, Vita

  11. I'd like to join the challenge. I'm tina at tinarathbone dot com. You can get to know me better at Artelicious, my blog:
    www.tina-rathbone.blogspot.com.

Although I maintain posts about several interests (quilts from trad. to artquilts, cooking, bird watching, sewing, reading , etc.), the main goal of blogging in Artelicious is sharing my journey towards living an artful life, with a dash of humor at the trials and tribulations encountered.

This is my year of sewing 13 garments or accessories in a year, 2013 go! And blogging about it. Most of all I'd love some community and skill building along the way. So, count me in!

  15. Hi lovely ladies. I would love to join the challenge. I have not purchased any RTW for about 6 months and am trying to sew all my own clothes - which is quite a challenge as I have only been sewing for a little over a year and have lots of wadders. So my wardrobe is quite empty at the moment and I am hoping to fill it up. I love to read other blogs and learn from more experienced sewists. I will purchase jeans (no where near doing those - and "intimates".

I am looking forward to this challenge.

As my blog name says - I am on the road to "sew wear".
